[SYNOPSIS]
막장에서 석탄을 캐고 있는 장성광업소 채탄부 A조 여섯 명은 막장에서 생사를 함께한다.
탄광에서 3년만 일하겠다고 들어온 이들은 짧게는 20년에서 길게는 40년 동안 석탄을 캐왔다. 사고를 겪을 때마다 떠날 결심을 했지만, 폐광된 후에야 그만두게 되었다.
한편, 35년 전 강원 탄광 광부였던 성완희 열사의 분신을 기억하는 사람들이 있다.
광부들의 인권을 위해 활동했던 20대의 청년들이 이젠 60을 바라보고 있다. 태백시장 재선에 도전하는 류태호, 정육점을 운영하는 전미영과 광부 출신 남편 천삼용, 탄광연구소 소장 원기준, 성완희 열사의 마지막 전화를 받지 못한 안재성, 탄광촌에 주저앉았던 늙은 광부의 마지막 모습도 모두가 광산이라는 그늘 곁에 머물고 있다.
오래전 태백을 떠났던 이연복은 8년간의 광부 생활을 가슴에 묻어두고 있다. 성완희 열사의 분신 현장에 있었던 다섯 명의 친구들은 모두 전국으로 흩어졌고, 어디에 살고 있는지조차 모르고 있다. 다만 어디에서 무슨 일을 하며 살아가던 양심적으로 살아가자 약속하고 헤어졌다. 누군가는 책임감으로 할 일을 찾고, 누군가는 죄책감으로 숨고, 누군가는 모두의 기억에서 지워졌다. 언젠가 다섯 명이 모여 친구의 묘에 가고 싶지만 찾을 방법이 없다. 폐광을 앞둔 태백이라는 공간에 모이고 흩어졌던 이들은 다시 만날 수 있을까.

태백의 역사는 대한민국 석탄산업의 역사이자 탄광의 역사를 간직한 도시다. 한때 산업 전사로 불리던 광부들은 2025년이면 역사 속으로 사라진다. 폐광과 더불어 광부들의 지난했던 삶도 각자의 기억에 남게 된다. 폐광으로 탄광의 역사와 광부의 삶은 사라지더라도 남는 건 없는 걸까? 남겨야 할 것은 없는가? 라는 질문에서 이 작업이 시작되었다. 태백에 유일하게 남아있던 장성광업소는 2024년에 폐광을 결정했고 그곳에 일하고 있는 광부들은 마지막 광부로 남게 되었다. 극한 노동에 숨을 불어넣었던 마지막 광부들의 현재, 오래전 태백을 떠났지만 광산을 가슴에 묻고 살아온 이들의 이야기, 그리고 폐광이 남기고 가는 것들, 용도폐기 된 탄광과 그 흔적에 가려진 광부들의 이야기를 담아내고 싶었다.

The six miners of Team A at Jangseong Mine, who dig coal at the coalface, share life and death in the dark. Though they originally entered the mine thinking to work for just three years, they've been working for 20 to 40 years. Each time they faced an accident, they thought about leaving, but they didn't until the mine closed.
Meanwhile, some remember Seong Wan-hee, a miner of Gangwon Mine, who self-immolated 35 years ago.
The young people in their twenties who once fought for miners' rights are now approaching their sixties. Ryu Tae-ho, now running for re-election as mayor of Taebaek; Jeon Mi-young, who runs a butcher shop with her husband, Cheon Sam-yong, a former miner; Won Gi-jun, the head of a coal mine research institute; Ahn Jae-sung, who missed Seong Wan-hee’s last phone call; and the last image of an aging miner, who collapsed at the mining town—all remain in the shadow of the mines.
Lee Yeon-bok, who left Taebaek long ago, carries the memory of his eight years as a miner deep in his heart. The five friends who were with him at the site of Seong Wan-hee’s self-immolation have scattered across the country, and no one knows where they live now. When they parted ways, they made a promise: to live with integrity, wherever life took them. Some have found the purpose to take responsibility, some have disappeared out of guilt, and others have been erased from everyone’s memory. They dream of one day visiting their friend’s grave together, but they have no way to find each other. Will they ever meet again in the place where they once gathered and parted, as the town now faces the mine closure?

Taebaek is a city that holds the history of South Korea's coal industry and the mines.
Once called the “Industrial Warriors,” miners will disappear into history by 2025.
With the closure of the mines, their harsh and repetitive lives will remain only in individual memories.
But as the coal industry vanishes, does nothing remain? Is there truly nothing we must preserve? This project began with these questions.
In 2024, Jangseong Mine, the last remaining coal mine in Taebaek, was decided to shut down. The miners working there became the last of their kind.
I wanted to capture the present lives of these last miners — those who once breathed life into grueling labor. As well as tell the stories of those who left Taebaek long ago, yet still carry the mines deep in their hearts. Also, what the mine’s closure leaves behind and the buried stories of miners that are hidden in the shadows of the decommissioned coal mine.
