[SYNOPSIS]
One summer, I received the last letter she had left behind in 2004. Chuncheon, Soyang-ro, Jangmichon—a red-light district whose name means "Rose Village," a place both marked by and named for roses. This was where she wrote her final letter, and it was also where I had spent my childhood. After receiving her letter, I returned there, but the Jangmichon she once inhabited and the house where I had lived had both disappeared without a trace. Where did all the women who lived here go? Why are they always the first to disappear? Who made them vanish? In search of the traces of those women whose lives, like the shimmering haze of summer, wavered and faded away.

[DIRECTOR'S NOTE]
Just when I start to think that perhaps life is still worth living, I am confronted by yet another news report of a hate crime against women. On early morning walks, on the way to the supermarket, on the way to meet friends—at every moment, some threat lurks in the daily lives of women. At the end of her 2004 letter, Ms. A wrote, "I hope for a world where there will be no more pessimists like me." But her wish has yet to reach us. I find myself thinking that perhaps her death was a choice she made in order to live. In a hellish world like this, she must have had very few options.
Reading her letter, I wondered: Aren't our lives somehow connected? The memories of women from long ago, Ms. A's memories, my own, and those of countless others—our memories and histories are endlessly passed down. We have been granted nothing but this endless summer. And so, we pass this long summer on to the next person. As each season departs, we sigh to ourselves, "We were lucky to survive."
This film is a prayer for all those who are disappearing, yet do not wish to disappear. It is a film of mourning for all the summers that have already vanished.

[SYNOPSIS]
어느 여름, 나는 2004년 그녀가 남긴 마지막 편지를 받았다. 그녀가 마지막 편지를 남겼던 춘천, 소양로, 장미촌. 그곳은 내가 어린시절을 보낸 곳이었다. 그녀의 편지를 받고 그곳에 갔지만, 그녀가 있었던 장미촌도 내가 살았던 집도 모두 사라지고 없었다. 이곳에 있던 여성들은 모두 어디로 갔을까. 그녀들은 왜 가장 먼저, 사라지는 것일까. 누가 그녀들을 사라지게 했을까. 여름의 아지랑이처럼 일렁이다 사라진 그녀들의 흔적을 찾아서.

'그래도 아직은 살 만한가'라는 생각이 들 때에 불쑥 여성을 향한 혐오범죄 소식을 접한다. 새벽 산책길, 마트 장보는 길, 친구를 만나러 가는 길. 여성들의 시간에는 매 순간 어떤 위협이 도사리고 있다. 2004년 A씨의 편지 말미에 '나와 같은 비관자가 없는 세상이 오길 바란다'는 그녀의 소원은 아직 우리에게 도착하지 않았다. 그녀의 죽음은 살기 위한 선택이었을 것이라는 생각이 들었다. 이 지옥 같은 세상에서 그녀가 택할 수 있는 것은 별로 없었을 것이다. 그녀의 편지를 읽고, 나는 '우리의 시간은 이어져있는 것이 아닐까' 생각했다. 아주 오래 전의 어떤 여성들의 기억들과 A씨의 기억과 나의 기억과 또 누군가의 기억들. 우리의 기억과 역사는 계속해서 되물림되고 있다. 아주 긴 여름만이 우리에게 허락되었다. 우리는 그 긴 여름을 다음 사람에게 물려준다. 떠나가는 계절을 보며 오늘도 우린 '운이 좋아 살아남았다' 한숨처럼 내뱉는다. 이 영화는 '사라지고 있는, 하지만 사라지고 싶지 않은' 모든 이를 위한 기도이며, 이미 '사라진 여름들'에 대한 애도의 영화이다.
