[SYNOPSIS]
2004년 2월 현대중공업 하청노동자 박일수씨가 “하청노동자도 인간이다”로 시작하는 유서를 남기고 공장 안에서 분신을 했다. 사건 직후 하청노동자들은 현대중공업의 크레인을 점거했고 ‘박일수 열사 분신투쟁대책위원회(이하 분신대책위)’가 만들어졌지만 현대중공업 노동조합은 “박일수는 열사가 아니다”는 선언을 하며 위원회를 탈퇴했다. 현대중공업은 정규직 노동조합이 참여하지 않는 교섭은 불가하다며 그 뒤로 숨어들었다. 이런 상황에서 현대중공업 노동조합 대의원 200여명이 열사의 영안실을 침탈하고 하청노조 조합원들에게 폭력을 행사하고 추모공간을 파괴하는 사건이 발생한다. 정규직과 비정규직 노동자간의 갈등은 점점 심화되었고 현대중공업 노동조합이 민주노총 금속노조에서 제명되면서 분신 두 달이 넘어서야 박일수 열사의 장례식이 치러지게 된다.
이 당시 현대중공업 사내하청 노동조합의 위원장이었던 조성웅과 경남지역에서 활동하던 민중가수 우창수가 이 영화의 두 주인공이다. 두 사람은 전선에서 가장 치열하게 싸웠고 가장 철저하게 배반당했다. 이후 조성웅은 화천의 깊은 산으로 들어가 땅을 일구며 시를 쓰고, 우창수는 창녕의 우포늪에서 아이들과 동요를 만들고 함께 부른다. 패배의 기억과 깊은 산의 외로움은 또 다른 방식의 에너지를 꿈꾸게 했고 자본주의 바깥을 살아가는 새로운 방식에 대해 고민하기 시작했다. 조성웅은 이를 ‘식물성 투쟁의지’라고 말하고 우창수는 ‘영성으로 가득한 삶’이라고 말한다. 그것을 위해서 시를 쓰고 노래를 하고 밭을 일군다. 공장과 도시를 떠난 실패한 혁명가의 지금과 박일수의 죽음을 통해 포기할 수 없는 새로운 혁명의 가능성을 감각해본다.

<오, 발렌타인>은 영화의 주인공인 두 사람(조성웅, 우창수)을 통해 인간과 자연의 관계, 생명과 비생명의 관계를 의심하고 회의하며, 생태운동이 본질적으로 반자본주의 운동일 수 밖에 없음을 확인하고 급진적 변혁 운동으로 기능할 수 있는, 혹은 할 수 밖에 없는 땅의 힘에 관해 이야기한다. 다큐멘터리 영화의 관성적 서사와 말초적 스펙타클에 저항하며 스스로 평등하고 스스로 자유로운 영화 형식에 관해 질문한다. 기록이 기록을 극복하는 방법을 탐색하며 서사-영상-소리의 관계 재편을 통해 영화와 관객의 위치와 역할을 교란해본다.

[SYNOPSIS]
In February 2004, subcontractor Park Il-soo set himself on fire inside the Hyundai Heavy Industries factory, leaving behind a will that began with the words, “Subcontracted workers are human too.” In the wake of his death, fellow subcontracted workers occupied a crane in protest, and the “Committee for the Struggle in Response to the Self-Immolation of Martyr Park Il-soo” was formed. However, the Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) regular workers’ union declared, “Park Il-soo is not a martyr,” and withdrew from the committee. HHI refused further negotiations without the participation of the regular union, effectively evading responsibility. In this climate, around 200 union delegates of the regular workers’ union stormed the mortuary where Park’s body was held, assaulted members of the subcontractors’ union, and destroyed the memorial space. The conflict between regular and non-regular workers deepened, and it was only after the regular union was expelled from the Korean Metal Workers’ Union that Park Il-soo’s funeral was finally held, more than two months after his death.
The film follows two central figures from that time: Jo Sung-woong, then head of the Hyundai Heavy Industries subcontractors’ union, and Woo Chang-soo, a protest singer active in the South Gyeongsang region. They fought on the front lines and were betrayed most thoroughly. Years later, Jo lives deep in the mountains of Hwacheon, cultivating land and writing poetry, while Woo resides near the Upo Wetlands in Changnyeong, composing and singing songs with children. Their memories of defeat and the solitude of the mountains began to nurture a different kind of energy, one that dreams of life beyond capitalism. Jo calls this a “vegetal will to struggle,” while Woo speaks of “a life full of spirit.” To embody this, they write poems, sing songs, and tend to the earth.
Through the presence of failed revolutionaries who left the factory and the city, and through the death of Park Il-soo, the film traces the still-unforsaken possibility of a new revolution.
[DIRECTORS' NOTE]
Oh, Valentine traces the aftermath of the death of Hyundai Heavy Industries subcontractor Park Il-soo, following the split and confrontation between full-time and part-time unions. Through this lens, the film reflects on the failures of class-based labor movements and raises critical questions about the state of contemporary labor and progressive activism in South Korea.
At its core, Oh, Valentine probes the relationship between humans and nature, and between life and non-life, through its two protagonists—Cho Seong-woong and Woo Chang-soo. It doubts, questions, and affirms that ecological struggle is, by nature, anti-capitalist. The film meditates on the radical potential of land—its force as a site of resistance and transformation. Resisting the conventional narratives and sensational spectacles often found in documentary cinema, Oh, Valentine explores what it means for a film to be self-equal and self-liberated. It seeks ways for documentation to transcend itself, disrupting the traditional relationships between narrative, image, and sound, and in doing so, unsettling the position and role of the viewer.
