[SYNOPSIS]
20여 년 전, 선영은 열여덟 살에 인천에서 추락 사고로 경추를 크게 다쳤다. 선영의 가족은 선영의 수술 비용을 마련하기 위해 인천의 가게와 집을 팔고, 아버지의 고향인 청주로 와서 지내고 있다. 청주로 온 이후, 아버지는 알코올 중독으로, 어머니는 힘든 노동으로 몸이 상하고, 선영의 친형은 군대에서 불미스러운 일로 정신질환을 갖게 된다. 선영은 고시 시험에 합격하면, 선영의 네 가족이 함께 살던 기억과 흔적이 남아 있는 인천으로 다시 돌아가고자 한다.

선영은 최근에 떨어진 시험의 실패가 매우 아까운 듯, 이번의 도전이 마지막인 것처럼 늘 최선을 다하고 있었다. 나는 선영이 내게 보여주고 싶어 하던 시험 합격에 관한 모습보다는 선영의 지난하고 힘들었던 삶을 무심하게 말해주는 일상의 이야기들이 더 깊게 다가왔다. 지극히 작은 일상을 묵묵히 살아가는 한 인간의 아름다움에 다가가고 싶었다.

[SYNOPSIS]
Over twenty years ago, at the age of 18, Sun-young suffered a serious cervical injury from a fall in Incheon. To cover his medical expenses, his family sold their home and store in Incheon and relocated to his father’s hometown, Cheongju. Since then, his father has struggled with alcoholism, his mother’s health has deteriorated due to strenuous labor, and his older brother developed a mental illness following a traumatic event during military service. Sunyoung dreams of passing the state exam and returning to his family in Incheon, where they once lived together, surrounded by cherished memories.
[DIRECTORS' NOTE]
Despite the disappointment of failing his recent exam, Sunyoung approaches every attempt as if it were his last, giving it his all. What struck me more deeply than his determination to pass was the quiet narrative of his challenging and arduous life, which he shared without pretense. Rather than portraying Sunyoung as an indomitable figure overcoming hardships, I aimed to capture the beauty of an ordinary human being who endures and perseveres in his everyday life with quiet resolve.
