[SYNOPSIS]
Have you ever learned something just for fun? The Little Garden sisters in Myeongju-dong, Gangneung's representative old city center, decide to go one step further and shoot a movie with the smartphone, they have been learning photography for the past three years. Average age of 75 years old, but it's still fun. Their short film <My Neighborhood Postman> was invited to film festivals and won awards. So now the new project is documentary filmmaking. However, it is not easy to accept the wrinkled and old me inside the frame, and the older sisters are now unable to move and can no longer film together. Besides, it is difficult to even get together due to COVID-19. Will they be able to complete the documentary?
[DIRECTOR'S NOTE]
100 years of life, shock of gray, second part of life... An aging society is an unavoidable reality, in which the elderly occupy most of the population. But we are afraid of aging. How could we live the next decades with a sick body in a poor household? The world only tells you to start a business with insurance for life after retirement. But it's more of a threat than advice. The elderly became a ‘problem’ and lost their value as ‘existence’.
Now we equate old age with being antiquated, making older people more and more invisible. Not because they don't exist, but because people don't look at them as if they don't exist. The older generation is already experiencing extinction due to the speed of technological social systems before they die biologically. Moreover, the city is filled with the space of processed images, pushing the older generation who have not yet adapted to the space to the outskirts of the space. The elder did not want such a world, but the rapidly changing material civilization betrays their senses and is rapidly overtaking them.
In fact, what the older generation wants, and what they should enjoy, is proper 'dignity' in their lives. What a non-aged person should discover and admire in an elder is not their maintenance of youth, but their presence and dignity. The beauty in being old, to properly perceive the beauty as the light that attracts attention, and to make it more perceptible, is the task of all of us who age ever since we were born, and who will someday grow old.
For some, being old is perceived as a future that has not yet come, and for others, as a future that will never come. However, the life of an elder also resides in everyone's life even in this right moment. In fact, the future is already here. Imagining and realizing how to relate to growing old, a future that has not yet arrived and has already arrived, is necessary for everyone that is aging at a rapid pace.

[SYNOPSIS]
써먹기 위한 것이 아닌, 온전한 재미로 무언가를 배워본 적이 있나요? 강릉의 대표적인 구도심 명주동의 작은정원 언니들은 3년간 배워오던 스마트폰 사진에서 한발 더 나아가 영화를 찍기로 마음먹는다. 평균연령 75세, 마음처럼 몸이 따라주지는 않지만 그래도 재미있다. 그렇게 만들어진 단편극영화 <우리동네 우체부>는 영화제에 초청이 되고 수상을 하기도 한다. 그렇다면 이제는 다큐멘터리 영화제작이다. 하지만 영상에 찍힌 주름이 많고 구부정한 나의 모습을 받아들이기 쉽지 않고, 나이가 많은 언니들은 움직이기 힘들어 더 이상 함께 할 수가 없다. 게다가 코로나-19로 모이기조차 어렵다. 그녀들은 다큐멘터리를 완성할 수 있을까?
[DIRECTOR'S NOTE]
“강원도가 지난 3월말 기준으로 65세 이상 인구가 20.1%로 집계되면서 역사상 처음으로 ‘초고령사회’에 진입했다. 통계청은 오는 2026년 우리나라가 초고령사회에 진입할 것으로 전망해 왔는데 강원도가 무려 6년 먼저 도달했다.” (2020년 4월 7일 강원도민일보)
100세 시대, 회색 쇼크, 인생 2막… 노인이 인구의 주된 비중을 차지하는 고령사회는 피할 수 없는 현실이다. 하지만 우리는 노년이 두렵기만 하다. 넉넉지 않은 살림에 병든 몸을 이끌고 어떻게 몇 십 년을 더 살까? 세상은 노후를 위해 보험을 들고 창업을 하라고만 한다. 조언이라기보다 협박에 가깝다. 노인은 ‘문제’가 되었고, ‘존재’로서의 가치를 잃어버렸다.
지금은 늙음을 낡음과 동일시하며 나이든 사람을 점점 더 비가시적으로 만들고 있다. 존재하지 않아서가 아니라, 존재하지 않은 듯 사람들이 시선을 주지 않기 때문에 노인들은 존재하지 않는 존재들이다. 노년 세대들은 생물학적 죽음을 맞기 이전에 이미 기술에 의한 사회 시스템이 지닌 속도 때문에 소멸을 경험하고 있다. 게다가 도시는 가공된 이미지의 공간으로 가득 채워져 거기에 미처 적응하지 못하고 있는 노년 세대들을 그 공간의 외곽으로 밀어내고 있다. 노인은 이러한 세계를 원한 바 없지만, 빠르게 변화하는 물질문명은 노인들의 감각을 배반하고 그들의 곁을 스쳐 빠르게 추월하고 있다.
실제로 노년세대가 원하는 것은, 그리고 노년이 마땅히 누려야 할 것은 그들이 살아온 삶에 대한 합당한 ‘존엄’이다. 노년이 아닌 사람이 노년에게서 발견해 감탄할 것은 젊음의 유지가 아니라, 존재감과 품위이다. ‘끝까지 자기답게’ 사는 노년의 아름다움, 즉 시선을 끌어당기는 연륜의 빛을 아름다움으로 제대로 지각하는 것, 더 나아가 지각하게 만드는 것은 태어난 이래 계속해서 나이 들고 있으며, 언젠가는 폭삭 늙은이가 될 우리 모두의 과제이다.
어떤 사람에게는 노년기가 아직 오지 않은 미래일 것이고, 또 어떤 사람에게는 영원히 오지 않을(것 같은) 미래일 것이다. 그러나 모든 사람의 ‘이 순간 여기’의 삶에는 노년기의 삶도 함께 깃들어 있다. 사실은 이미 와 있는 미래다. 아직 오지 않은 동시에 이미 와 있는 미래인 노년기와 어떻게 사귈 것인지를 상상하고 또 구현하는 것은 고령화가 계속 빠른 속도로 진행 중인 현재 누구에게나 필요하다.
