[SYNOPSIS]
Lee Yunjeong, my mother was devoted to the church for over 30 years. But, stopped going after the Sewol ferry disaster in 2014. After quitting church she started going to the office of a human rights group for migrants in Ilsan. She is busy helping the migrants in the community, along with that she has started visiting Hwaseong Foreigner Shelter(a national security facility that detains people subject to forced departure). She finds it difficult to do computer work for the first time, office work, and dealing with foreigners. To make matters worse due to the COVID-19 outbreak, the number of detained foreigners in the shelter is increasing and so are Yunjeong’s phone calls. As Yunjeong’s daughter and the director of this film, I began to film her because her transition looks amazing, unfamiliar and cool. While watching her from aside, I started to get angry little by little. Relationships that do not give and only take. Why does my mother do this much?
[DIRECTOR'S NOTE]
There are times when my mother seems like a person who has taken on all the problems of the world by herself. Thanks for that, I saw and heard about people who are not in the news, who exist but were denied their existence, and finally met them. Why did I have to be her? Why did my mother have to step in? And why couldn’t I just watch her? Seaching for the answer to this questions, this film is a record of time extending from mother and daughter to teammates, from observer to partners.

[SYNOPSIS]
30년 넘는 세월 동안 교회와 집을 오가며 독실한 교회 집사님으로 살아온 나의 엄마 이윤정. 윤정은 2014년 세월호 참사 이후 더이상 교회를 다니지 않는다. 교회를 관두면서 다니게 된 곳은 일산의 어느 이주민 인권단체 사무실. 지역사회의 이주민들을 조력하는 일과 함께 화성외국인보호소(강제출국 대상자를 구금하는 국가보안 시설)를 방문하기 시작한 윤정은 눈코 뜰 새 없이 바쁘다. 그는 난생 처음 해보는 컴퓨터 작업과 각종 사무 일, 그리고 외국인 응대에 어려움을 느낀다. 설상가상으로 2020년부터 시작된 코로나 바이러스 유행으로 외국인보호소에 구금되는 외국인 숫자는 늘어만 가고, 윤정의 휴대폰은 하루도 조용할 날이 없다. 윤정의 딸이자 이 영화의 감독인 나는 윤정의 변화가 신기하고 낯설고 멋져 보여 윤정을 카메라에 담기 시작한다. 윤정과 윤정의 활동을 옆에서 지켜보던 나는 조금씩 화가 나기 시작한다. 현실적으로 불가능 일들에 애쓰는 윤정과 ‘기브앤테이크(give and take)’가 아닌 ‘기브(give)’만 하는 관계들.
엄마는 왜 이렇게까지 하는 걸까?

엄마가 꼭 세상의 모든 문제를 혼자 떠안은 사람처럼 보일 때가 있다. 타고난 오지라퍼인 엄마를 엄마로 둔 덕에, 나는 뉴스에서는 볼 수 없었던, 존재하지만 존재를 부정당한 사람들을 보고 들었고 끝내 만나게 되었다.
왜 엄마여야 했을까? 왜 하필 엄마가 나서야 했을까? 그리고 왜, 나는 엄마를 가만히 지켜볼 수 없었을까? 이 질문에 대한 답을 찾아 나가는 이 영화는 모녀에서 동료로, 관찰자에서 연대자로 확장되는 시간에 대한 기록이다.
