1910년대, 일제의 강제 침략으로 조선의 경제는 무너졌고, 10대 조선 소녀들은 가족의 생계를 위해, 일본으로 돈을 벌러 떠났다. 자의 반 타의 반 일본 오사카에 도착한 그들 중엔 11세 소녀들도 있었다.
전세계의 면산업을 주름잡던 일본 오사카의 방적공장에서 일하게 된 조선의 여공들은 일본인 여공들에 비해 열악한 대우와 환경, 그리고 차별과 폭력, 성적 착취에 노출되어 있었다. 먹을 게 없었던 그들은 당시 일본인들이 쓰레기로 버린 육류의 내장을 주워 먹으며 살아남았는데, 일본인들은 그런 그들을 조선의 돼지들이라고 불렀다.
하지만 그들은 여공의 노래를 부르며 고통과 슬픔을 삼켰고, 스스로 야학을 열어 한글을 공부하며 정체성을 지켰다. 그리고 일본 여공들조차도 두려워 망설였던 파업을 독자적으로 주도했던 강한 여성들이었다.
이 다큐멘터리는 조선인 여공 22명의 증언과 그들의 이야기를 통해, 오늘날 우리 시대의 이방인들과 이민자들을 돌아본다.
그녀들이 노래했던 '조선인 여공들의 노래' 가사는 기록으로 남아 있지만 그 멜로디는 아직 발견되지 않았다.
[DIRECTOR'S NOTE]
이 다큐는 일제 강점기 시대의 이민 1세대이자 여성 노동자들에 관한 삶과 투쟁에 관한 이야기다. 동시에 지금 이 시대, 우리 세계의 이야기이기도 하다. 왜냐하면, 지금 현재도 전세계에는 침략과 전쟁, 그리고 그로 인한 분쟁과 가난으로 인해, 많은 사람들이 고향을 떠나 낯선 땅에서 편견과 차별, 핍박과 폭력 속에 노출된 채 살아가기 때문이다. 어쩌면 우리도 누군가를 편견과 차별의 시선으로 바라보고 있을지도 모른다.

[SYNOPSIS]
In the 1910s, Korea's economy collapsed due to Japan's forced invasion. Teenage Korean girls worked in spinning mills in Osaka, Japan, to support their families, with some as young as 11 years old. Female workers from Korea who toiled in Osaka's spinning mills, leading the world's spinning industry, faced lower treatment and poorer conditions compared to their Japanese counterparts. They endured discrimination, violence, and sexual exploitation.
While the Japanese discarded meat intestines as trash, Korean female workers sustained themselves by picking up and consuming these discarded intestines. Consequently, the Japanese derogatorily referred to them as 'Korean pigs.' Nevertheless, Korean female workers endured the hardships by singing work songs, establishing their own night schools, self-studying Hangul to maintain their national identity, and even leading strikes.
This documentary, through the testimonies and stories of 22 Korean female workers, prompts reflection on the struggles faced by strangers and immigrants in our time. Although the lyrics of the labor songs they sang are documented, the melodies remain undiscovered.
[DIRECTOR'S NOTE]
This documentary explores the lives and struggles of first-generation immigrants and female workers during the Japanese colonial era. Simultaneously, it tells the story of that era and reflects on our contemporary world. This is because, even today, people around the world are leaving their hometowns due to invasions, wars, resulting conflicts, and poverty, choosing to live in unfamiliar lands where they face prejudice, discrimination, persecution, and violence. Perhaps, even unknowingly, we too harbor prejudices and engage in discriminatory behavior.
