[SYNOPSIS]
In 2000, the era of inter-Korean reconciliation, 63 unconverted long-term prisoners were repatriated to the North, and converted long-term prisoners were excluded from the list.
In 2001, those excluded made a declaration stating that the conversion by torture was invalid and started the 2nd Repatriation movement. However, the possibility of it happening has been fading due to several political conflicts.
This film deals with the hopes and despair of the long-term prisoners who wish to return home.
[DIRECTOR'S NOTE]
Converted long-term prisoners are one of the tragic victims of the division of the Korean Peninsula. Who failed in their mission for unification and were arrested, had to spend decades in prison, kneeled down by torture, and were unable to return to the North's hometown...director tries to sympathize with their pain and remorse, and also to reveal their own beautiful humanity. This is because they still preserve the ordinary truth we lost, which we were fingering and indifferent to them.

[SYNOPSIS]
2000년 남북화해시대를 맞아 63명의 간첩출신 장기수가 북으로 송환되었으나, 전향 장기수들은 명단에서 제외되었다. 2001년 이들은 '전향 무효 선언'을 하고 2차 송환 운동을 전개한다. 2005년 남한정부는 이들을 북으로 돌려보낸다는 계획을 세웠지만 보수 우익들의 격렬한 항의로 무산된다. 이후 핵을 둘러싼 북미갈등, 남한사회의 보수화 분위기 속에서 2차송환의 가능성은 점점 엷어진다. 2018년 문재인 정부의 출범으로 마지막 희망의 불꽃이 지펴졌지만 결국 꺼지고 만다. 2022년 현재 생존해 있는 2차 송환 신청자들의 평균 나이는 91세이다.
이 영화는 좌우대립이 심각한 남한사회의 정치적 현실 속에서 생존해야 하고, 고향으로 돌아가고 싶어 하는 전향 장기수들의 희망과 절망의 이야기를 30년간 지켜본 감독의 시선으로 풀어가고 있다.
[DIRECTOR'S NOTE]
전향 장기수들은 한반도 분단의 역사 속의 비극적 희생자 중 하나이다.
공작임무에도 실패하고 체포되어 수십 년을 옥중에서 보내야 했고 폭력에 무릎을 꿇어 전향을 당했고 북의 고향에도 돌아가지 못한 사람들…
가진 것, 배운 것도 없고 생소한 남한에서 '빨갱이' 낙인이 찍힌 채 삶을 이어나가야 했던 이들. 작품은 그들, 전향 장기수들의 고통과 회한에 공감하는 동시에, 그들만이 가지고 있는 아름다운 인간미를 드러내고 있다. 그들에게 손가락질하고 무관심했던 우리가 잃어버린 평범한 진실을, 소중한 희망을 그들은 여전히 보존하고 있기 때문이다.
