당신과 나처럼 별스럽지 않은 사람들이 카메라 앞에 앉는다.
소소한 이야기를 풀어내던 주인공들은 하나의 질문을 만난다.
"2014년 4월 16일, 당신은 무엇을 하고 있었나요?"
쓰러져 가던 배를 바라보며 슬퍼하던 교사
대통령을 만나러 온 유가족을 보며 말 한마디 못 건넨 카페 사장.
유가족 곁을 지키며 버텨온 인권 활동가
사고 해역에서 시신을 수습했던 기억에 힘들어하는 진도 어민
수업 시간에 소식을 접하고 그저 뉴스를 바라본 학생.
시간이 흘렀지만 여전히 흉터처럼 남아 있는
세월호 참사의 기억을 꺼내놓는다.

슬픔에는 무게가 없겠구나 생각되는 순간들이 있었다. 세월호 참사에 대한 이야기를 나눌 때 종종 서로가 준비 안 된 눈물을 보일 때가 있다. 참사의 목격자도 당사자일 수 있지 않을까 하는 질문으로 영화는 시작됐다.
영화가 다루고 있는 5년의 시간 동안 슬픔을 말할 수 없었던 목격자는 정체를 알 수 없는 슬픔의 덩어리를 가지고 있었다. 덩어리를 시간의 축으로 나누고 기억의 장면으로 재구성해 5년을 들여다본다. 화자는 당혹, 죄책감, 분노, 무기력 그리고 설명할 수 있는 언어가 없는 시간에 대해 이야기한다. 슬픔을 이야기하면서 목격자는 당사자이자 생존자가 된다. 외롭게 각자 그날 이후를 버텨낸 사람들이 공감이 주는 위로의 힘을 감지하길 바란다.

Unexceptional people just like you and I sit in front of a camera. Their small stories come to reach a question.
What were you doing on the 16th of April, 2014?
It's not easy to recall a day from years ago, but the memory of that day clearly lingers in one's mind. A college student of the same age as the victims says she couldn't get her eyes off of the news. A fisherman becomes speechless for a while after telling a story of him having retrieved a body in the sea. A teacher confesses she couldn't answer to a question like 'what if I was in the ferry...' A cafe owner recollects he couldn't even talk to the bereaved families because of their grief beyond reckoning, while a human right activist decides to just be with them as she has nothing else to do. All these people talk about the five years from the day of tragedy, calmly yet passionately.
The five years’ time that has left scars since the Sewol Ferry disaster is documented and named as trauma. The people face their trauma and start to speak of responsibility rather than sorrow and anger. With this modest but clear courage, we could probably write a new story after the trauma of Sewol Ferry.

[DIRECTOR’S NOTE]
There were moments when sorrow seemed weightless. People often shed unexpected tears when talking about Sewol Ferry disaster. This film began with the question that whether witnesses of a disaster could be the ones traumatized.
The people, who had witnessed the incident and not been able to speak out their sorrow properly for 5 years, had an unidentifiable mass of grief. The mass is divided by time scale and reorganized into certain memories so that we can look into the past 5 years. While speaking of confusion, guilt, anger, helplessness, and unexplainable times, the witnesses become people who were directly involved in and survived the incident. I hope you could find the power of consolation from empathy with others.
