[SYNOPSIS]
새벽 4시 20분. 다급한 알람들이 연이어 울린다. 어제 마지막 열차를 몰아 기지창에 들어왔던 기관사가 쪽잠을 깨고 숙직실을 나선다. 같은 시각, 좁고 기다란 터널끝에서 밤새 수리하고 돌아오는 정비사들이 어슴프레 보인다. 졸린 눈을 비비고 나온 역장의 손끝에 역사 입구를 가로막던 셔터가 올라간다. 일제히 쨍하고 형광등이 켜지면 이곳, ‘언더그라운드’에도 아침이 온다. 오늘의 첫차가 부산의 가장 끝자락 호포역에서 기지개를 켠다. 열차는 매일같이 같은 시간, 같은 자리로 묵묵히 들어선다. 도심 곳곳을 오르락 내리락하는 열차에 올라타는 끝도 없는 사람들. 모두가 잰걸음으로 땅 위 삶을 향해 지하를 거쳐만 갈 때 ‘언더그라운드’에는 이 반듯한 공간을 움직이는 사람들이 있다. 오늘도 시끄럽게만 돌아가는 세상 아래, 지하에서의 삶은 어떠한지 그들에게 다가간다.

[DIRECTOR’S NOTE]나는 철도덕후다. 난개발된 지상과는 다른 반듯한 지하 공간의 아름다움, 적당히 유려한 지하철 노선도 그리고 무엇보다 기차가 어둠을 헤치고 땅 밑을, 때로는 강 밑을 달린다는 그 아찔함이 좋았다. 수년간 ‘철덕’으로 가졌던 열차를 향한 관심은 이 ‘언더그라운드’를 메트로놈을 두고 연주하듯 일궈내는 사람들로 번졌다. 복잡한 미로 속 길잡이던 매표소 직원이 사라지고 무인전철마저 등장해 기관사까지 사라져가는 오늘, 그토록 흠모하던 그들의 손을 부여잡고 묻고 싶어졌다. 점점 화려해져가는 부산이라는 도시, 이 어두컴컴한 지하에서 당신들의 삶은 어떠하냐고.

Numerous people are on subway trains running up and down the city center endlessly. There are people who run this decent space “underground” when everybody goes through the basement for life “on the ground” with busy steps. Under the noisy world today, we approach them to see what life is like underground.

[DIRECTOR’S NOTE]
I am sort of a railway maniac. I like the beauty of the underground, unlike the ground with development thoughtless for the environment and the elegance of a subway line map. Moreover, I love the feeling when the subway runs across into the darkness under the ground. Of course, I love the people who work for the underground. Those who guide us to complex maze have disappeared and a quick ticket system has replaced their position. I felt sadness. The city of Busan is getting glamorous compared to their lives. I want to ask them how your life in a dark basement.
