창립 40주년을 맞은 ‘메아리’는 70년대 후반 포크 음악에서 시작해 80년대 독재에 저항하기 위한 민중가요, 90년대 이후 밴드 음악을 만들고 불러온 서울대학교 노래 동아리이다. 포크와 노래운동에 평생을 바쳐온 졸업생들과 대학생으로서 청춘을 노래하는 밴드동아리 메아리 사이의 40년은 한국의 현대사이자 진보적 음악운동의 역사이기도 하다.

[DIRECTOR’S NOTE]‘메아리’는 70년대 후반 포크 음악에서 시작해 80년대 독재에 저항하기 위한 민중가요, 90년대 이후 밴드 음악을 만들고 불러온 서울대학교 노래 동아리이다. 광주민주항쟁과 87년 6월항쟁, 2016년 촛불과 탄핵에 이르기까지 메아리의 노래와 사람들은 갈등하고 변화해왔다. 포크와 노래운동에 평생을 바쳐온 졸업생들과 대학생으로서 청춘을 노래하는 밴드동아리 메아리 사이의 40년은 한국의 현대사이자 진보적 음악운동의 역사이기도 하다. 같지만 다른 노래와 이야기를 가진 메아리 멤버들은 2017년 창립 40주년 기념콘서트를 개최했다. 이 다큐멘터리는 노래와 역사, 그리고 변화와 단절에 관한 것이다.

Marking its 40th anniversary, 'Meari' is a folk song singing club at Seoul National University that started its history in the late 1970s, resisted against dictatorship in the 80s and has produced and sung band music since the 90s. The 40 years between graduates who have dedicated their lives to folk and singing movements and the band club Meari, which sings youth as a college student, are also the history of Korea's modern and progressive music movement.

[DIRECTOR’S NOTE]
"Meari" is a folk song that started in the late 1970s with folk music to resist dictatorship in the 80s, and a singing club at Seoul National University that has produced and sung band music since the 1990s. From Gwangju Democratic protests to the June 1987 protests, to candlelight vigils and impeachment in 2016, the song of Meari has been in conflict and change. The 40 years between graduates who have dedicated their lives to folk and singing movements and the band club Meari, which sings youth as a college student, are also the history of Korea's modern and progressive music movement. The members of Meari, who have different songs and stories, held a concert to celebrate the 40th anniversary of their founding in 2017. This documentary is about singing, history, and change and disconnections.
